Empowerment through Employment

  • Project ECHO - In May 2003, Turning the TIDE launched Project ECHO (Empowering Communities Help Others).  Project ECHO is an initiative of the City of Philadelphia to link ex-offenders with faith-based organizations. http://www.dol.gov/cfbci/#organization  Turning the TIDE was one of the three faith-based organizations selected and funded by the Workforce Investment Board to implement this initiative.  Through the use of its technology center, participants receive career training and access to the State of Pennsylvania’s CareerLink system for employment.  Participants also receive spiritual and emotional counseling and support for their transition back into society.  Since inception, a number of participants and their families have benefited from this unique outreach.  Through this program we now develop and maintain a diverse group of mentors from the faith based and community based organizations around the city of Philadelphia

Empowerment through Healthcare

  • West Philadelphia Minority Health Collaborative (WPMHC): Launched in September, 2006, WPMHC, an HIV/AIDS demonstration program, is a collaborative venture of the Philadelphia AIDS Consortium (TPAC), the AIDS Care Group (ACG) and Turning the TIDE.  WPMHC was developed to meet a growing need for PE, outreach and educational services for African Americans and Latinos living with HIV/AIDS, particularly African American and Latina women living in west Philadelphia.

WPMHC enhances the availability of and access to comprehensive community based HIV/AIDS services, particularly those provided in non-traditional settings.  WPHMC is designed to provide prevention education and prevention counseling and testing services to persons at risk for infection targeting hard to reach persons at risk for infection in disenfranchised communities – specifically African American and Latina women living in the zip codes 19104, 19139, 19143, 19146 and 19151.  Ultimately, WPMHC strives to increase the number of individuals who:  1) reduce their high-risk behaviors; 2) are tested for HIV serostatus using rapid testing technology; 3) receive their test results; and, 4) are linked to appropriate care and/or risk reduction services.  .

  • Health Promotion and HIV Education - Launched in winter of 2006, through a partnership with the Circle of Care and The Philadelphia AIDS Consortium, Turning the TIDE became a  neighborhood community center in which residents interested in learning more about the HIV/AIDS epidemic could come and receive information, counseling and to receive free rapid testing.  This program was developed in response to the fact that the neighborhoods surrounding the TIDE Center have the highest number of reported cases of HIV/AIDS in Philadelphia.

In addition to providing drop-in services, Turning the TIDE also conducts its HIV Education through weekly outreach and education sessions, Turning the TIDE provides risk reduction and prevention education services to individuals at risk of HIV/AIDS, targeting both adults and youth - particularly focusing on the African American and Latino residents of our neighborhood.

Empowerment through Skill Development

  • The International Computer Driver’s License (ICDL) - Turning the TIDE offers training to attain the International Computer Driver’s License (ICDL), the world’s leading Information Technology user certification.  The goal of the certification program is to validate the training a participant receives in the eyes of potential employers.  ICDL is offered in 100 countries around the world and is now available in the United States.  Governments, institutions and leading organizations worldwide have endorsed ICDL.  A successful ICDL candidate is more productive at work and avoids excessive need for support, makes better use of available technology, has the skills necessary to compete in today’s digital marketplace and is ready to acquire additional skills if an Information Technology career path is pursued.
